From my point of view, thinking about art and the act of making art are like parallel rails on a train track. There is an intellectual track that is learning about the history of art, reading about the contemporary discourse and learning about ideas in other disciplines that are of interest to you. Running parallel is the track of pursuing one's visual impulses and following one's intuitions. Like the tracks of a train, it is important, I believe, not to try to force the two tracks together or conversely allow them to get too far apart. In either case the train derails. But kept as nicely parallel enquiries they are able to feed each other by a kind of osmosis. This is how I have tried to live as an artist. The following story should not give an impression that my artworks are simply illustrations of literary ideas I have been thinking about because that would not be true.
